Finding the right blanket can make a big difference for anyone, especially someone dealing with aches and pains. There are plenty of different types of blankets available in the marketplace that can offer dramatic improvements in decreasing the daily aches and pains that come with aging.

The key is understanding the differences between the different types of blankets and finding one that works. In this article, we will be going over some of the different types of blankets you could consider and which respective blankets stand out in the marketplace for each type.

Different Types Of Blankets For Elderly People

Here are some of the different types of blanket that elderly people typically need.

1. Weighted Blankets

A weighted blanket is a tremendous option for anyone dealing with issues with aches and pains. Weighted blankets are blankets that have been used for their therapeutic benefits for quite some time. These are blankets that weigh anywhere from as little as 5 to as much as 30 pounds. These blankets work by offering a similar sensation you would get from hugging someone. The technique is known as deep pressure stimulation. While there isn’t direct evidence pointing towards weighted blankets solving chronic pain, it simulates similar mechanisms offered by massage therapy which has been shown to help decrease chronic pain [1].

2. Warming Blankets

Warming blankets are another popular type of blanket that you could consider if you are trying to find something that would be beneficial for someone dealing with aches and pains caused by aging. These electric blankets warm seniors by electricity. Heat therapy has been used for numerous years to provide pain relief to those who suffer from muscle soreness [2]. Heat therapy works by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation. This speeds up the healing process and limits soreness.

3. Cooling Blankets

Cooling blankets are another option to consider. Cooling blankets could be ideal for hot sleepers and for those who might be experiencing issues with falling and staying asleep. Unfortunately, insomnia remains one of the most common sleep disorders that affect older adults [3]. Cooling blankets are effective in assisting those suffering from insomnia [4].

Best Blankets For Elderly

Now that you know a little bit more about the different types of blankets for seniors, here are some of my favorites – categorized by type!

365 blanket by muslin comfort

This cozy and warm blanket is made of 8 layers of soft, breathable all-natural 100% cotton. It is also hypoallergenic and soft against fragile and sensitive older skin.

I’ve been using a 365 Blanket myself for the last month (provided to me by Muslin Comfort for this review). Generally, I tend to be a hot sleeper and toss and turn a lot if I get too hot. But, that didn’t happen with this blanket.

All of Muslin Comfort’s blankets are oversized. I have a full-size bed and the blanket I previously used was 76″ x 80″. This blanket is a generous 96″ x 96″ – it just about hits the floor because of my platform bed!

I love how soft it is against my skin – the material reminds me of those soft gauze-like reusable diapers. It keeps me warm all night without making me hot or clammy because it is so breathable.

I followed Muslin Comfort’s recommendation for sleeping “European Style” with this blanket. his means sleeping with the blanket right next to your skin without a top sheet or comforter. I admit, was a little odd at first but it made a difference in my sleep.

That way, the super soft muslin is right next to your skin without a sheet in between. If you are cold-natured, place a sheet on top of the blanket or put a comforter on top for added warmth.

This blanket has some heft to it which I like. I have tried weighted blankets in the past but they always too heavy to me and I couldn’t move like I wanted. This blanket has enough weight to it so that you know it is there but it isn’t “heavy”. So, you get some of the benefits of a weighted blanket without feeling like weights are laying on top of you.

Finally, this blanket is easy to care for and can be laundered at home in your home machine. Give it extra time to dry though because of how absorbent it is!

Gravity Blanket: The Weighted Blanket for Sleep

This is the top-weighted blanket in the marketplace. While it’s relatively high-priced, the quality, construction, and performance more than makeup for it. This is good not only for those who suffer from aches and pains but also for those who have difficulty falling and staying asleep.

What’s Good About It?

  • Quality

As mentioned, this blanket stands out from the rest of the class when it comes to the quality and construction of it. This blanket comes in (3) different weight variations including 15, 20, and 25 pounds. Therefore, you should be able to find the right weight for any user.

The cover is made up of very soft micro-fleece which is a major plus for anyone older. After all, older people tend to have more sensitive skin. Therefore, having a softer outer cover can prove to be much more comfortable.

  • Easy To Wash

Having something that has an easy-to-remove cover is a must for anyone elderly. After all, elderly people are prone to accidents. This blanket features a duvet cover that is fully machine washable for easy maintenance.

Weighted blankets offer deep pressure stimulation. It is proven that cuddling or hugging someone either all night or 10 minutes before going to sleep can help you relax and prep your body for a good night’s sleep. Because a weighted blanket like the Gravity blanket can simulate this, it can assist one in falling asleep.

Also, studies show that weighted blankets were favored and well-tolerated among those who used them in this study [5]. This blanket will offer enough deep pressure stimulation that it can increase blood circulation which should improve aches and pains.

This is another excellent offering from Gravity. Gravity continues to showcase how much they care about quality with this product. This premium blanket is a combination of weighted and cooling blankets.

How it can help?

This weighted blanket is ideal for those who are seeking the benefits that a weighted blanket can offer without the drawbacks of added heat retention. Some people find that traditional weighted blankets sleep ‘too hot.’

This blanket has a sufficient 13-pounds of evenly distributed glass beads ensuring deep pressure stimulation for the entire body and the outer fabric is micro mink and sherpa which makes it extremely comfortable to sleep with.

What’s Good About It?

  • Quality

This blanket comes with a super soft outer fabric that is sure to please even the pickiest people.

  • Combination Blanket

This is both a heated blanket and a weighted blanket. Therefore, you are getting a lot of value for the money.

  • 5-Year Warranty

This blanket comes with a 5-year warranty which is a big plus since the blanket uses electricity. It shows the confidence they have in their products.

How does it help?

This blanket is a combination blanket that allows the user to experience all of the benefits each type has to offer. This means this blanket would work to not only help reduce aches and pains that elderly people experience due to the consequences of aging, but it will also help one fall asleep.

Elegear Revolutionary Cooling Blanket

This is a standout option if you are solely looking for a cooling blanket.

Anyone that sleeps hot would be able to experience better overall comfort and sleep with this blanket. This blanket is made up of 80 percent mico nylon and 20 percent PE cool fabric on the top. Whereas, the bottom features 100 percent cotton which makes it a versatile blanket no matter if you are using it in the winter or summer months.
