Clarity E814CC Amplified Corded/Cordless Combo with Answering Machine Review
The combination offers the best of both worlds - both a corded and a cordless phone!
- Large buttons are back lit for nighttime use
- Good contrast makes numbers easy to see
- Boosts incoming calls and answering machine playback
- Ringer has 10 tones and 6 volume levels
- Expandable by adding additional handsets
- Has buttons that may confuse less tech friendly seniors
- Memory functions on cordless require menu access
- No way to label memory buttons on main phone
The cordless phone system from Clarity is the best choice for someone who wants the complete package in their phone but also needs sound amplification. This phone has a corded regular landline phone, a cordless phone, a speakerphone AND a digital answering machine. Even better, each system is adapted for use by the elderly.
Corded AND Cordless Phone
A big advantage to this model is that is has a corded phone base and cordless phone handsets too. How could that benefit seniors and the elderly? If they forget to charge the cordless, the main phone will ring and call out. This could be very important in an emergency. It could also save the caregivers some worry too by knowing they will always be able to reach their loved one.
For the senior with vision problems, easy to read buttons are large. The numbers on them are also contrasted well making them easy to see and read. The cordless handset also the same big buttons with high contrast print.
The caller ID screen also uses big print for clear, simple reading of the display. It is even back lit for night time use or in darkened conditions. There is lots of contrast here too that helps with reading.
For elderly with poor hearing, this phone amplifies incoming calls 40 dB. That 40 decibel boost is on the higher end of the amplification scale but there are other phones with higher levels.
Even the answering machine message playback and speakerphone use amplification to make calls clear.
There are also 10 ringing patterns with 6 different volume levels to choose from so that the senior won’t miss calls. It might take a little trial and error but you are sure to find a ring tone that works with these options.
There are 5 memory buttons on the main phone. They are small though and there isn’t much room to label them. They are simply listed as M1, M2, etc. Although, the name and number will display on the screen once pressed. This could help.
To use the memory dialing from the cordless phone, the user will need to access the menus and use the up and down arrows. Many seniors will be fine with this. But, those with memory or recall issues may need to choose a different phone. I have some recommendations here for that situation.
This system is expandable with additional handsets up to a total of 4. Keep another cordless handset in the bathroom or the bedroom for added security. The best part is that is works via radio waves from the base so there is no need to install another phone line or jack!

For seniors who want lots of features but need sound amplification and easy to see numbers, this is a great phone to choose. It has just about everything a person would want in a phone: corded phone, cordless phone, answering machine, and caller ID.

There are more buttons than I recommend for this group BUT the buttons are clear what they are used for and are easy to read. Keep that in mind for seniors who get confused easily with technology.
