What better than to enjoy your golden years in golden sand? As a senior, you’re likely looking to spend a lot of your free time relaxing. There is no better place to relax than on the beach.

However, beach travelers need a lot of things to have a good time. That doesn’t mean you should go out and spend on everything beach-related.

In this article, we’ll review the most essential beach gear and accessories for seniors. And, many of these items make excellent gifts for senior travelers – especially the beach bums!

1. Beach Chair

While you may be able to get away with heading to the beach with nothing but a beach towel when you’re younger, that’s not the case when you get older.

Because of this, you’re going to want to get yourself a beach chair. However, not just any beach chair. You want to prioritize getting a beach chair that is comfortable and once that is easy to get out of too. This usually means getting a beach chair that isn’t sitting right in the sand.

You can see my list of recommended beach chairs for seniors here.

2. Sun Protective Clothing

When you were younger, you might have been laying out in the blazing hot sun. When you’re a senior, those careless years start to catch up with you. The majority of skin cancers result from the accumulation of sun damage we’ve experienced throughout our lives [1].

Also, as we get older, our skin gets thinner and more susceptible to sun damage [1]. Both of these things make it more important than ever to invest in protective sun clothing. Look for clothing that offers UV protection including beach cover-ups, shirts and even hats.

3. Beach Tent

If you’re heading to the beach for an extended period, you’ll want to have a beach tent that you can set up. A tent will offer more sun protection than a basic umbrella.

Along with this, a tent will give you plenty of room to store things. Some tents are lightweight and easy to set up. Try to find one that is easy to use for your beach travels.

4. Cooler

If you’re going to be spending the entire day at the beach, you won’t want to have to walk up and down the beach to your condo or hotel. Instead, you’ll want to bring everything you need with you.

That’s why you need to get a well-insulated cooler to pack all of your drinks and snacks. Keep plenty of water in your cooler to keep yourself hydrated while on the beach.

5. E-Reader

If you’re like most seniors, you enjoy a good book now and then. There is nothing more relaxing than enjoying a book on the beach. If so, you’re not going to want to lug around heavy physical books with you.

Instead, you’ll want to carry around an e-reader. That way, you can buy and download the books you want to read without having to worry about the extra weight.

6. Beach Cart or Stroller Wagon

Have you ever seen someone lug around bags and bags full of things to the beach? Wondering if there is a better way?

Well, there is.

A stroller wagon can be a convenient and easy way for seniors to take everything they need with them down to the beach without having to carry it.

Look for a beach cart that is effortless to pull. Finding one with heavy-duty airless tires will ensure you can bring everything you need to the beach without the strain of having to carry it all.

7. Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

If you are someone that enjoys listening to music, a podcast, or even an audiobook, you’ll want to bring a Bluetooth speaker down to the beach.

A Bluetooth speaker can be a great addition to your beach trip because you’ll be able to use it while you’re sitting at the shoreline or even in your room. Just be sure the Bluetooth speaker you are bringing is waterproof as it may make contact with water at some point.

8. Sunglasses

This is a must-have item for anyone that is heading to the beach. Sunglasses are very important to wear at the beach even if you’re planning on staying underneath an umbrella because the sun reflects off the water and the sand.

By wearing sunglasses with polarized protection, you should be able to protect your eyes and make your beach-going experience much more enjoyable.

9. Waterproof Case For Phone

You’re likely going to end up wanting to bring your phone down to the beach with you. If so, you’ll want to ensure that you have a waterproof case or bag in your possession.

This is important because you don’t want your phone to get damaged from water exposure. Luckily, they make these cases and bags in all sizes. That way, you can find something that fits no matter what phone you have.

10. Mesh Beach Bag

Getting a beach bag is a must. However, you don’t want to get the first bag you see. Instead, you want to get a bag that is both lightweight and versatile. Likewise, you want one that isn’t going to trap sand inside of it.

The best way to ensure your bag doesn’t allow sand to build up is by getting one with holes in it. That’s where a mesh beach bag comes into play. A mesh beach bag is not only more portable and versatile, but it will inherently keep sand out.

11. Portable Battery

If you are planning on bringing a lot of different electronics with you to the beach, you’re going to want to get yourself a portable battery pack. A portable battery pack is one of the best investments you can make in your beach-going experience.

These battery packs can be excellent for those that plan on using e-readers, tablets, or even phones while at the beach. The last thing you want is your electronics to die while at the beach. However, just be sure that you are putting your electronics in the shade. That way they don’t overheat while at the beach.

12. Sunscreen

You want to be using sunscreen before you head to the beach and while you’re at the beach. As mentioned above, it’s important to take care of your skin when you are planning to spend a lot of time in the sun.

13. Sand-Free Beach Mat

If you are someone that plans on laying down in the sand, you might want to pack a sand-free beach mat. A beach mat can be a good addition for anyone that is going to be laying down at the beach. It can be a good place to have a beach picnic.

By getting one that is advertised as sand-free, you should be able to minimize sand that gets trapped and it can make your beach experience a much more comfortable one.

14. Steel Tumbler

One of the best accessories you can get for your beach travels is a steel tumbler. These tumblers use a vacuum between two layers of steel for exceptional insulation.

Because of this, it can be good for keeping coffee warm or beer cold while in the direct sun at the beach. Thus, it’s a versatile option no matter what your beverage of preference is while at the beach.
