Guide to Gardening Tools for Seniors the Help Make the Job Easier

Gardening is a great way to get some sunlight and physical exercise. It’s even been shown to relax people. Plus, the rush of feel-good hormones from the activity is good for mood and overall well-being. A lot of seniors enjoy gardening. Not just the activity, but also the satisfaction of creating a beautiful garden. Unfortunately, they often have difficulty with some of the movements necessary for the activity. To help with that, I’ve created this easy guide to gardening tools for seniors that could make gardening easier. And, with less pain.

Why do Seniors Need Special Gardening Equipment?

A lot of seniors enjoy gardening as a hobby to keep them active. Many senior men and women alike enjoy this hobby because of the satisfaction they get growing their own fruits and veggies.

But, some often have trouble with it. This may be due to disease progressions, general weakness, arthritis, or lack of physical conditioning. Specially-designed gardening tools can help with all of those problems. They’re designed to compensate for these problems. They also allow seniors to continue with the garden chores they love.

Being able to keep up with chores like this for as long as possible is really important. It improves the mental health and well-being of your senior. Research has found that hobbies such as gardening boost brain power, decrease depression, and stave off age-related cognitive decline.

That’s why you should give your senior any assistance they need to continue with their favorite activities as long as possible.

Garden Equipment for Seniors: Options

There are a number of aids available to help your senior in the garden. Before you buy anything, it’s important that you consider your senior’s physical condition and needs first.

If they have arthritis in their hands, there are a number of gardening tools with specially designed handles that might help. And if they have generalized weakness, then you need to think about aids that will help them get up from the ground.

You can also buy long handled tools and gardening stools that allow people to garden from a normal sitting position.

Recommended Gardening Tools for Seniors

There are a ton of helpful products on the market for seniors who want to keep up with their gardening. Some make getting up and down easier. Others reduce pain in the hands. Others even help when strength is an issue.

Garden Kneelers

One of the most important gardening aids for seniors is a garden kneeler. This useful little device has a low platform with two handles on it. It is easily carried around the garden. And, when you need to kneel down, you do so on the padded platform.

This is better for your knees because the handles are quite high. It also gives users assistance to stand once more. This is great for people who have sore or sensitive knees and have trouble getting up from floor level.

I recommend the garden kneeler below from Ohuhu that is available on Amazon. It is usable as a kneeler and can be flipped upside down to become a seat. This kneeler also comes with a pouch to hold a few smaller garden tools. It’s an expensive way to save your knees and back. You can learn more about it here:

Garden Stools

If you or your senior still can’t manage with a garden kneeler than a higher garden stool might give the necessary support. You’ll probably need to buy long handled tools with this piece of equipment though. This is because they only allow the gardener to sit at a normal level while working.

The only drawback with this piece of equipment is that you need to stand up and move the stool as you move around the garden.

A company called Vertex makes this neat garden stool. It has a contoured seat that matches the “natural curves” while sitting. This makes it much more comfortable than a flat surface. There are also accessory cushions that match. The base also rocks slightly which helps it move with you as you bend over to garden. Check it out below.

Garden Tools with Ergonomic Handles

Ergonomically designed garden tools are another great idea for seniors.  Mainly because they are easier to grip and hold. This is very helpful if you have arthritis or general weakness in your hands. But, they offer other benefits as well.

With the design of some of the handles on these tools, there is less strain on the wrist and arm. They’re also easier to use because they compensate for general weakness. This handy benefit reduces the strain on your entire body while performing difficult tasks.

This set of ergonomic garden tools reduces stress on hands and wrists. The cushioned curved handles also give extra leverage to keep hands from tiring quickly. It comes in several different colors plus 4 piece and 5 piece sets. Individual pieces are also available. Check it out here.

Garden Swivel Scooters

Another good option is known as a low rider swivel scooter. These feature a seat set above four sturdy wheels. You can sit down on this seat and stay close enough to the ground to do your gardening.

When you’re ready to move on, you can scoot about with your legs to another part of the garden. Without having to get up! There are a few different versions of these scooters with different features, so choose the one that’s right for your physical abilities and condition.

Here is a great example of a garden scooter. I like this one because it has a contoured seat for comfort. It also has a small handle that helps steer. With a 300 lbs weight capacity and steel construction, it is very well built. I also like that it looks a little like a tractor from a certain large brand that most people are familiar with!
