I was provided a free BHearing PSAP by Jabees for the purpose of this review. However, I received no other compensation and the opinions are mine based on my own, personal experience using it.

It’s an unfortunate fact of aging that you won’t be able to hear as well as you did when you were young. This hearing decline affects all part of your life too from talking with your friends, to enjoying TV and music, to conducting business and using a phone.

Jabees created their BHearing Personal Sound Amplifier to help with these exact situations.

But, does it really help? Let’s take a closer look!

What is the Jabees BHearing Hearing Device?

The BHearing is a personal sound amplifier (PSAP) that comes with a free app that tests your hearing to provide a personalized hearing profile made just for you.

It can be used as a stand alone product just to improve your ability to hear the sounds around you – like talking with friends. But, it also uses Bluetooth to connect to all your favorite devices like TVs, mobile phones, audio players and more.

How Does the BHearing Work?

The Jabees BHearing Hearing Device improves your ability to hear the sounds around you by amplifying sound picked up through microphones in a neckband. It then transmits them to your ears via a wired set of ear buds.

The BHearing falls into a category of products called personal sound amplifiers or PSAPs. PSAPs are designed to help people improve their hearing and are typically less expensive than hearing aids. They don’t require a prescription or special fitting.

Initial Setup

After going through this simple setup process on your smartphone and taking a quick hearing test, you’ll instantly hear the sounds around you much better.

  1. Charge the batteries. Surprisingly, the pair I tested arrived with a completely dead battery. I had to charge them fully before I could begin.
  2. Download and open the app. The app is available in both the Apple App Store and on Google Play for Android users. While it’s downloading, go ahead and turn the BHearing on and slip it around your neck.
  3. Pair the device with your smartphone. Choose “Bluetooth Pairing” on the app and follow the simple instructions for connecting your phone to the BHearing.
  4. Take the hearing test. Choose “Hearing Test” on the app. The app will play a series of sounds at various volumes and you just indicate on the app if you “Hear It” or “Don’t Hear It”. Then, it adjusts itself and sets up a custom profile for you.
  5. Fit the ear tips. It comes with several sized ear tips that you easily slip on and off to fit your ears. Choose the one that is most comfortable.

Charging the Device

One really great thing about this particular hearing device is that it is possible to use the device continuously even though it is battery powered. It comes with an extra battery and a special portable charging capsule so that you can easily alternate the batteries by keeping one in the device and one on the charger.

You can charge the battery in the main unit also via a mini-USB charging cable. Each battery last about 5 hours and takes 2 hours to charge.

Using the BHearing

To use the BHearing PSAP, first put the horseshoe-shaped neckband around your neck. Hold the ends together and you’ll feel the magnets engage which helps it stay around your neck. Then, place the earbuds in your ears. The first time you use it, you may have cinch the cables up a bit to keep

The remote controls you will use the most are on the right side bottom of the neckband. Here you find the power switch, the Multi-Function Button (MF), and the volume buttons. See the diagram below for a better idea how they are located.

Once you have turned the device on and have it paired to your favorite audio/video devices, you will use the MF button the most. This one button changes the hearing mode (more on that below), plays or pauses music, and answers/rejects phone calls.  On each side of the MF button is the volume up and volume down button.

How to Get the Best Results

To get the best results when using the BHearing PSAP, always complete the hearing test in the app. This will customize the audio profile to your own, unique hearing profile allowing you to hear better and more clearly.

Also, be sure to take the time to try out the multiple ear tips to find the one that fits the best. This will definitely improve your comfort which, in turn, affects your overall enjoyment!

Because this is a hearing amplifier device, you should keep the volume at the lowest setting you need that allows you to still hear well. Also, keep the volume in the lowest setting when turning it on to prevent sudden loud noises.

How to Use the BHearing as a TV Listening Device

There are two ways to use the BHearing as TV headphones to improve your TV listening experience. The device will work right out of the box just picking up the TV sound as it would any other sound in the room. I tried this and it worked fine but the sound is a bit “tinny”. You may need to experiment with the mode settings to see which works best.

The better way to is to sync your TV with the BHearing via Bluetooth. That way the sound is sent directly to your device instead of it picking up the sounds from the air and amplifying them. If you have an older TV or you don’t have a Bluetooth TV, you can get the HearLink Bluetooth Transmitter and hook it up to your TV.

Features

Here are the important features of the BHearing you need to know about before making a buying decision.

Multiple Functions

This one device serves a wide range of functions. First, you can use it as a sound amplifier, similar to the way hearing aids are used, for boosting the sound and conversation around you.

Next, it can be used as wireless headphones for your TV, tablet, and MP3 player or other audio device by syncing it via Bluetooth.

Finally, you can use it to make and receive calls on your mobile phone with crystal clear clarity.

Custom Hearing Profile

Like I discussed above, this device allows you to tailor it to you own unique hearing profile using the hearing test in the app. This hearing test will identity specific frequencies where your hearing is less than optimal and will boost those areas specifically so that you can hear better. It adapts and fills in the gaps for you.

Preset Modes

Different situations have different hearing needs. For example, if you are in a room with a lot of people talking at once, you need to be able to focus on the people closest to you that you are talking to. On the other hand, if you are out in the park, you may want to enjoy the sounds of nature that are all around you.

By using MF (multi-function) button or the app, you can change the way the device picks up ambient sound based on 4 preset modes including, general, restaurant, traffic, and outdoor. That way, you can help your ears focus on the sounds you really want (or need) to hear.

Noise Reduction Technology

Another important standard feature is the built-in active noise reduction technology which filters out background noise which allows you to focus better on the sounds you actually want to hear. You can also turn this feature off or adjust the setting via the app.

INR Ear Protection Technology

When you are wearing a sound amplifier, the last thing you want is a sudden, loud noise to be amplified even louder! So, to help with that the BHearing comes with Impulse Noise Reduction (INR) which automatically suppresses sudden loud noises to prevent damage to your ears.

Secure and Custom Fit

The neckband slides and adjusts to allow a custom fit plus you have your choice of ear tips like I discussed above. Plus the neckband locks using magnets to keep it from falling off.

It is also very lightweight and easy to forget that it is there. I wore it for 4 hours straight without having to adjust it at all.

Portable Charging Capsule

You get two batteries with the device plus a portable charging capsule. Each battery gives you about 5 hours of use and takes 2 hours to fully charge.

The portable charging capsule will charge a battery 3 times for 15 (3 X 5) more hours of use. So, if you are in a situation without a good place to plug-in, you can get up to 20 hours of total use.

If you are near an electric outlet however, you can use the device nonstop by switching batteries and keeping one on the charger at all times. The charging cable though is kinda short – less than 13″ long.

Optional HearLink Microphone

This optional bluetooth receiver/transmitter microphone offers several benefits and adds more functions to the BHearing.

A few specific ways that I see it benefits older adults is in group presentation settings like church and for TV listening. If you are listening to a speaker in a group presentation, you could place this microphone closer to the source of the sound (up to 328 feet away) to improve your reception.

Another use is if the PSAP doesn’t pick up the TV well enough for you or you don’t like a tinny sound, you can connect this to your TV which will then transmit stereo audio right to the headset. It lasts for 6 hours when on battery power. If you are using the Hearlink for the TV, just keep it plugged in next to the TV.

Customer Support

Jabees has several instructional and how to videos on their YouTube channel showing you how to setup and use the device. If you have additional questions or need help, they suggest you email them and they will reply within 24 hours. The website does list a phone number but it is long distance with no visible toll-free option.

Return / Satisfaction Guarantee

Jabees offers a 7-day, 100% satisfaction guarantee plus a 1-year warranty that covers defects in manufacturing. You can see the full return policy here.

Cost

The cost of this product is about the middle of the pack. At the time of this review, the retail cost is $199.00 – but Graying With Grace readers can save 15% by using code scottgrant at checkout bringing the cost down to about $169. This discounted cost is an especially great deal considering all the features I have discussed above.

There are other devices that cost considerably more that don’t have the custom hearing profile feature for example.

Pros & Cons: Is the BHearing Hearing Device Right For You

Based on my personal use and experience with this device, here are the things I really like about it – and some things that could be improved.

What’s To Like?

  • The BHearing tailors the amplification to meet your unique needs based on the hearing test results.
  • You can customize the fit and feel with difference sized ear tips.
  • It has multiple uses from just a general hearing amplifier to serving as wireless headphones for your audio devices and phone.
  • Pairing it with other Bluetooth devices was easy and worked the first time.
  • While the app is the best way to set it up, it can be used without the app after that.
  • It is extremely lightweight, comfortable and easy to wear for long periods of time.

What’s Not To Like?

  • The function and volume buttons are difficult to see because they are black on black. Some contrast like white print on black would be helpful especially for older adults with poor eyesight.
  • It can’t be used with hearing aids because the earbuds must be placed in the ear. This can’t really be changed and you probably already realized that – just wanted to make sure you were aware.
  • The charging cord is very short – just over 12 inches. This severely limits charger placement. You can buy a USB extension cord to lengthen it though.
  • When pressing buttons, you get feedback through a series of beeps heard through the ear buds. While you will eventually learn what 3 beeps or 4 beeps mean, I found it a bit distracting at first.

FAQ / Questions You Might Have

How long does the battery last?

The device comes with 2 batteries and each battery on about 5 hours. It takes 2 hours to charge fully. See my comments about charging above.

Does it have to stay connected to the app? Do I have to connect it to a phone?

No! You use the app for setting up the device initially and for taking your hearing test. The other functions are operated by the buttons on the neckband. So, if you (or the person using it) doesn’t use a lot of technology or doesn’t want to fool with the app, you can set it up for them initially on a family member’s or carer’s phone. After that it will work just fine without it.

I do highly recommend you go through the initial set up on the app though – especially the hearing test. That step will make a significant improvement in your ability to hear sounds – especially the very high and very low tones.

Conclusion

So, to wrap up, the BHearing has some great features that make it a good choice for hearing impaired folks looking for a sound amplification device to help them hear better. I love that it uses the hearing test to make itself work even better for you. You won’t mind using it for long periods of time because it’s lightweight and comfortable to wear.

It’s a particularly great device for those who don’t mind using a little technology and are familiar with apps and smartphone use. The app has a lot of features that you can use to really dial in how the BHearing works for you. But, then again, it’s not absolutely necessary for daily use.

It is also a great choice for people who want one hearing device to work with all their other electronic and audio gadgets. This one can be used with multiple devices easily.

So, yes, I do recommend it. It works well and is easy to learn. I do wish the buttons were a bit easier to read and the charging cord was a lot longer. But, for most people, these are minor complaints.
