Needing help in the bathroom is hard to talk about, and harder to shop for. Here are the products I have tried hands-on, plus top-rated picks, grouped by the problem they solve. Tap “See it in action” on any of mine to watch it work before you buy.
If you only try one thing
Try a bidet attachment. It fits under the toilet seat you already have, needs no electricity, and washes with water instead of wiping, so there is no reaching or twisting. In my demo I install this one start to finish on a real toilet. The trade-offs: it is cold water only, and it is made for standard two-piece toilets.
What do you need help with?
Wiping aids and reach
When reaching is the problem.
Bidets and peri bottles
Washing instead of wiping, at home or away from it.
Wipes and washcloths
For recovery, bed care, or days a shower is not possible.
Showering after toileting
A handheld shower rinses clean, and a seat and grip make it safe.
Toilet safety and commodes
Something to hold on to, and commode care that is easier on the caregiver.
Grab bars and toilet rails
Something solid to hold on to, on either side of the toilet.
Underpads and overnight protection
For waking up dry, and for protecting chairs and beds.
Comfort and recovery
Padded seats, hemorrhoid and tailbone relief, and toilet posture.
Who picked these
I’m Scott Grant, a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA®) and Senior Home Safety Specialist (SHSS®), and I have spent more than 20 years helping older adults and their families. I tried every product with a “See it in action” badge hands-on, and my reviews include the downsides. The products marked “4+ stars on Amazon” fill out each section; I have not tested those.
